Child Counselling: Supporting Children in Therapy

With our child counselling services we understand that when a child faces challenges, it can impact the entire family unit.  Big emotions and behaviours can leave the household in a state of increased tension and conflict.  That’s why our approach to child counselling both supports children in therapy and provides guidance for parents and caregivers.

Challenges Families Face

Family Counselling: Displeased son sitting with arms crossed on sofa at home. Worried mother looking at her child. Focus on boy.The following are examples of behavioural challenges families face.  Do any of them sound familiar?

The number of temper tantrums you face in a day seems out of the norm.  Everything sends your child into a meltdown.  You feel like you’ve tried EVERYTHING to help your child and nothing seems to work.

Your child is struggling at school.  He can’t seem to control his anger and is taking it out on those around him.  The number of calls from the school is increasing and you’re feeling PRESSURED to fix it.

Fears and anxiety seem to have overtaken your child.  She worries about everything! Going to bed is the worst because that is when all the fears pile up.  You’ve tried every trick in the book, and NOTHING WORKS to help her feel safe.

Child Counselling Can Help

If those challenges sound familiar to you then maybe it’s time to try child counselling.  Supporting kids with their big emotions and behaviours is challenging!  With so many books out there on parenting, it’s hard to know where to turn.  Child counselling can help you learn effective strategies that actually work!  Strategies that increase cooperation and collaboration!  In child counselling your child can learn skills to manage emotions in helpful ways, which will result in less outbursts and meltdowns.  Your child will not only have a bigger toolbox for problem solving and decision making, they will be more adaptable and flexible too.  Your household will also experience less tension and instead be filled with stronger relationships and family fun.

How Child Counselling Can Help

Our child counselling services prioritize making parents our partners in care.  We value the role of parents in supporting their children, and want them involved in the process every step of the way.  A child’s brain needs guidance and practice to remember the tools it learns in therapy.  The parent-child relationship is the biggest tool there is for building the brain! Our team of therapists help children develop the tools needed to be more adaptable, flexible, and resilient.  Parents help children use those tools outside of the therapy room.

Our Child Counselling Approach

To ensure our child counselling approach is effective in helping children and parents, we do the the following:

Family Counselling: colourful emotion toys with the words optimistic and hopeful.Conduct Comprehensive Assessments: Our therapists meet with parents first to develop in-depth assessments.  Understanding how parents think and feel about their concerns informs us about what works and what doesn’t.  Then we meet with children to understand how they think and feel about the concerns.  A thorough assessment is necessary for effective treatment planning.  Our therapists take the time to truly understand your child’s behaviour so that you can use parenting strategies that actually work.

Create Achievable Goals: Understanding the changes families want to make, combined with the science that informs us about thriving families, ensures that counselling is set up for success.  We work with families to identify realistic goals and action plans.

Partner with Parents and Caregivers: Our family counsellors provide regular updates on your child’s progress.  Guidance and support is offered to parents on how to use the tools their child learned in therapy at home.  Our goal is to empower parents with resources and strategies to create a nurturing and supportive environment for their child’s emotional growth.

Collaborate with School and Community Professionals: Our therapists collaborate closely with schools, family doctors, and other professionals involved in your child’s care.  We know it takes a community to raise a child and we value a coordinated approach to support.

Child Counselling: Our Commitment to Your Family

At our family counselling centre, we are committed to helping your family thrive. We understand the challenges you may be facing, and we are here to provide the support and guidance you need to navigate them successfully. Our goal is to empower children and their parents to strengthen family relationships, build lifelong skills, and reduce household stress.  We help families have more family fun and connection!
